Look at Your Brand as an Ongoing Project

If you check the personal branding process for most experts, it will include the following steps:

  1. Find/Extract
  2. Create/Express
  3. Communicate/Exude
  4. Maintain
  5. Maintain!

OK, you got it. It’s really all about maintaining and the reason is, once you create your personal brand, all you need is to communicate and maintain it (monitoring and controlling in Project Management phases). Building a promise is not a one-step process, but is one that will last a lifetime. Because exuding your unique brand attributes is a continuous process, how can you make it an easy one to which to commit?

A project as defined by Project Management Institute is:

“A temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result.”

So we have:

Project Name: Me, Inc.
Business Case: Having a remarkable personal brand.
Project Schedule: As long as you live.
Project Cost: Money, actions, decisions, commitment, etc.

“Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements.”

Forever could be defined in the dictionary as “An endless period of time” but in Moments of Forever it defined as: “The collective existences and experiences of all people – of every man, woman and child who has ever lived or who will ever live.”

“A personal brand is the impression you want to leave on people, the way you want to be remembered.” ~ @JacobShare

OK, I tied all these things together to help you see that your personal brand is like a project managed by you to create YOU and leave your mark on people forever. Applying project management to your inner and outer brand-building process everyday is a good practice to make a part of your daily routine.

The project is not about creating an image of who you want to be, it’s about identifying the unique value that you bring to the table. Building your brand is not a one-time deal. Once you create it, you will be required to maintain your brand moving forward and always be consistently assessing and reassessing yourself to make sure you are living up to the promise of the personal brand you have presented.

If you think about yourself and your brand more as an ongoing project, it may be easier to stick to.

P.S. You are the project manager of a project called ME, Inc.

P.S.S. Your personal brand is not something you do once and are done. You need to continue building and nurturing your brand forever.
